Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. She is both the first female vice president and the highest ranking female official in the United American. As a part of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the attorney general of California from 2011 until 2017 and as the state's attorney general from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. She started her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then she was recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. She was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010 and elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez during the 2016 Senate elections to become the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to serve as a senator in the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated health reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. Her sharp questioning of Trump officials during Senate hearings earned the attention of the nation, including the second Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh who was indicted with sexual assault.
